What is the Difference Between an ATV and UTV?

May. 28 2021 Miscellaneous By Van Eiseman

If you’re just getting into powersports vehicles, you may be wondering: what is the difference between an ATV and UTV? Our new powersports inventory is full of different models, so it may be a bit daunting to scour through it.

However, Beaverton Motorcycles is here to compare and contrast both ATVs and UTVs in order to help you decide which may be the better fit for you.

ATVs: All-Terrain Vehicles

An ATV, or all-terrain vehicle is typically used for recreation like racing or trail riding, and are meant to be a quick means of transportation over rough terrain.

ATVs have you in a straddled seating position, utilizing handlebar steering and allow you to maneuver through a variety of terrain conditions. They generally have three or four wheels, and are typically kept at a lower pressure compared to UTV tires.

ATVs are typically built for just one rider, though some are made to carry one passenger in addition to the operator. ATVs should also be sized for your specific build, as they are not one-size-fits-all.

As far as navigation, the majority of stock ATVs come with a thumb throttle, which controls acceleration. To brake, operators can use either the brake handle or foot pedal, depending on which ATV is in operation.

UTVs: Utility Terrain Vehicles

As you’d expect from its name, UTVs are meant for work more than play. UTVs are big, powerful and allow side-by-side passengers. In direct contrast to ATVs, UTVs are typically used to haul equipment and supplies.

UTVs typically have four wheels but can have more for specialized purposes. Similar to a car, a UTV is handled via a steering wheel. UTVs are faster and more powerful than ATVs but cannot be maneuvered as nimbly.

Acceleration is achieved via foot pedals and seat belts are generally standard on most models. UTVs also have a lot of storage space, most known for hauling feed, hay and supplies on farms but can definitely be found in non-agricultural communities.
