How To Check Your Motorcycle’s Tire Pressure

Sep. 18 2020 Rider Experience By Van Eiseman

Alongside checking your oil and adjusting your chain, inspecting your tire pressure is a crucial maintenance task every rider should perform routinely – as often as every two weeks, many suggest.

Maintaining the right pressure not only ensures you stay safe with ultimate traction, but it also saves you money by preserving your tire tread.

Fortunately, checking your tire pressure is a relatively painless undertaking, especially given our in-house motorcycle experts at Beaverton Motorcycles laid out easy-to-follow instructions.

Step-By-Step Instructions For Checking Your Motorcycle’s Tire Pressure

First, a quick disclaimer: check your tire pressure when your tires are cold, meaning you didn’t just heat them up after a ride, which will raise your tire pressure.

With your tire pressure gauge, in hand:

  • Unscrew the cap off your tire’s valve stem, located in the inner rim

  • Place the gauge over the valve and press down. Your gauge should show a reading.

If you hear air escaping after pressing down, you likely measured an incorrect reading. In turn, you should perform multiple checks to get an accurate measurement of your tire pressure.

Perform this test on both your front and rear tires and compare your readings to the psi specification indicated in your owner’s manual or tire side-wall to confirm whether you need to add air.

While you’re already close with your tires, take a moment to look out for shallow tread depth, uneven wear, cracks, and punctures. If you notice any of these signs, seek out advice from a professional to make sure your tires are safe to ride on.
